I sat down and interviewed the Face of Outre Clothing NZ, get to know the story behind Outré and an inside scoop into the New Zealand Fashion Industry.
What is the story behind naming the company Outré?
It’s a funny story really, one of my closest friends Ash sent me a whole list of potential names for the company. And I thought, Outre sounded cool. I decided to look into its meaning, and felt that it represented what I wanted to achieve with the brand. Be out of the ordinary in New Zealand.
What inspired you to start Outré clothing?
Outre initially started off focusing on brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Lacsote and the like. The aim was to provide relatively decent priced products, and make these brands more attainable. However, with COVID coming in 2020, our supply lines quickly dried up. We then decided to pivot and begin designing our own brand Outrè The Label. Our brand is now focused on delivering fashion forward clothes which are designed right here in New Zealand.
What is your favourite part about being in the fashion industry?
I think I love how fast paced it is. Im a person who needs to constantly doing something, and I think this industry provides this for me. From meetings, to selecting fabrics to liasing with production. The industry is rapidly evolving and I believe this is the perfect time for brands to rethink what they are doing.
What’s the dream for outré clothing NZ? The end Game?
My dream is to make Outrè an internationally recognized brand. The old saying goes ‘good things take time’, and I believe with hard work and determination, we will be able to have our products being worn all across the globe.
How has the fashion industry changed since COVID hit?
I think it has. Brands are now more focused on what the customers want. We tend too often design clothes for ourselves, but we should be designing for you. I think COVID has provided so many unique opportunities for the industry.
What is the best and what is the hardest part about owning a fashion label?
The best part by far is the satisfaction of our customers. Whenever we receive feedback, it allows us to see what we are doing right and wrong. The hardest part about owning a fashion brand is doing the research into trends to ensure our customers are getting what they want.
What is the most important thing driving your business?
I don’t think Outre would have achieved what it has in such a short amount of time, if it wasn’t for the team at Outrè. Zoe & Sophie have elevated the brand to beyond what I could have ever imagined over the past 12 months. I am so fortunate to have an amazing team working with me to deliver some of the comfiest clothes available in the market.
If you were to go back to the beginning would you have done anything different?
Going back, I would have ideally started with Outrè The Label first, and then worked my way into products such as Tommy Hilfiger. I think having your own label allows you to speak to your customer and make clothes which they would wear.
